Skin Spots: How to Prevent and Treat Them

Dark spots are a skin blemish that is often caused by a combination of factors such as sun exposure , hormonal changes, or skin aging . But understanding how they form and how to treat them is essential to maintaining even, glowing skin.

In this article, we delve into the different types of stains and offer you the best tips for treating and preventing them , especially during the fall.

Types of Skin Blemishes: What They Are and How to Recognize Them

Sunspots (or solar lentigo) : These brown or dark spots are caused by sun exposure and tend to increase with age.

The most affected areas are the face, hands and décolleté.

Melasma (ochloasma): Often called the "mask of pregnancy ," melasma is a dark pigmentation caused by hormonal changes, especially during pregnancy or while taking oral contraceptives.

The spots appear on the face, mainly on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip.

Age spots (senile lentigines) : They appear with the aging of the skin and are due to the slowing down of cell turnover.

They tend to form in areas most exposed to the sun, such as the hands and face.

Post-inflammatory spots: These result from skin trauma such as acne or irritation, and appear as dark areas that remain after the skin has undergone inflammation.

How skin spots form

Skin spots are caused by an alteration in the production of melanin , the natural pigment that gives skin color.

Several factors can trigger this phenomenon:

Sun exposure: UV rays are one of the main causes of skin blemishes, stimulating excessive production of melanin.

Hormonal changes: Especially during pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives, hormones can influence melanin production.

Aging: Over time, the skin's ability to regenerate decreases, making blemishes more visible.

Skin inflammation or lesions: Acne, scars or irritation can cause an overproduction of melanin during the healing process.

How to prevent skin blemishes

Prevention is essential, and you don't have to wait until summer to start taking care of your skin.

Here are some effective tips to prevent the formation of stains throughout the year, with particular attention to autumn.

Sun Protection All Year Round: Even during the coldest months, UV rays are present and can damage your skin.

Use SPF 30 or higher every day to protect your skin.

Antioxidants : Incorporate ingredients like vitamin C or ferulic acid into your routine, which help protect skin from environmental damage and reduce the formation of blemishes.

Regular Exfoliation: Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and stimulates cell renewal, reducing the appearance of blemishes and evening out skin tone.

Specific treatments : Serums and creams containing ingredients such as niacinamide or kojic acid can help lighten existing spots and prevent new ones from forming.

When to intervene?

Autumn is the perfect time to start more intensive treatments against blemishes . After summer exposure to the sun, the skin needs to regenerate and prepare for the winter months.

During this time, you can take advantage of more powerful exfoliating and lightening treatments without the risk of direct exposure to intense UV rays.
