Portraits on the Skin: Dialogues Beneath the Surface
In our "Portraits on Skin" column, today we talk to Giulia, a girl from our Community who wrote to tell us how she faced the sudden changes in her skin at thirty and the path that led her to rediscover the true meaning of skincare.
Hi Giulia, can you tell us when you first noticed that your skin was changing?
"It all started right after I turned 30. Even though I had always had fairly normal skin, I started to notice the appearance of blemishes, pimples, blackheads, spots and redness. It was quite shocking to see my skin change so drastically."
What were your first steps in trying to solve these problems?
"Initially, I relied on dermatological products with exfoliating actives like AHA acids, thinking that I would have to fight acne with intensive treatments. Unfortunately, this approach only made things worse, sensitizing my skin and damaging the skin barrier."

How did you change your approach after these initial difficulties?
"After several failed attempts and ineffective advice, a new dermatologist pointed me toward a possible hormonal cause of my skin problems. That's when I learned I had PCOS, which affected my sebum production. On medical advice, I supplemented with folic acid and inositol to help regulate the function of my ovaries."
What changes have you made to your skincare routine on the advice of your dermatologist?
"It's been a radical change. I've swapped harsh cleansing gels for a hydrating cleansing milk, started using a toner regularly, and ditched my skin-purifying creams for a moisturizer enriched with hyaluronic acid. This new regime has really made a difference in my skin!"

What is your message for those who are facing similar issues with their skin?
"I would like to say that it is essential to listen to your skin and not be afraid to seek a second medical opinion if things do not improve. Every skin is unique and often the solution is less aggressive than you think. And, above all, take care of your skin with love and delicacy."

Thanks to Giulia for sharing her story and her precious advice. Her experience underscores the importance of a personalized and informed approach to skincare, especially when dealing with unexpected changes.
